Isla Holbox: Why This Car-Free Paradise Still Belongs on Your Bucket List

Ten years ago, we stepped onto the sandy shores of Isla Holbox for the very first time. It was love at first sight. No asphalt, no mass tourism. Just that pure, raw island vibe that stole our hearts instantly. Recently, we finally made our way back. And to be completely honest: a lot has changed. Where we used to see small, rumbling golf carts, rugged buggies now dominate the sandy streets. The island has grown and modernized, but that magical, laid-back atmosphere? It is still deeply rooted in the ground. Holbox remains an absolute paradise, especially for a quick two-day micro-adventure.

Getting There: Traveling from Playa del Carmen to Holbox

Traveling to this paradise is fortunately very straightforward and an adventure in itself. You simply hop on the comfortable ADO bus in the center of Playa del Carmen heading toward Chiquilá. This ride straight through the Mexican mainland takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. Once you arrive in the small harbor town of Chiquilá, you can walk right over to the pier. The ferries from Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos will be waiting for you there. The boat crosses over to the island in just 20 to 25 minutes. Because the ferries run about every half hour, you never have to wait long.

What does the trip cost approximately?

ADO Bus: Expect to pay around 350 to 450 MXN (approx. $18 to $23 USD) for a one-way ticket.
Ferry: A ticket for the crossing costs 300 MXN (approx. $15 USD) per person.
Total travel time: Including the transfer, you will be on the road for about 3 to 3.5 hours.

Golden Travel Tip: There are only two direct ADO buses per day running from Playa del Carmen to Chiquilá. Because this route is highly popular and seats fill up fast, we strongly recommend buying your bus tickets in advance online or via their app. This ensures you won't get stranded at the station and delay your island getaway!

What Makes Holbox So Unique?

Isla Holbox is a narrow, car-free island located in the north of Quintana Roo, tucked away inside the Yum Balam Nature Reserve. It is a place of beautiful extremes: from vast mangrove forests filled with wild flamingos to a lively town center covered in stunning street art. You won't share the sandy roads with cars, but with travelers from all corners of the world. It is a place where you quickly lose track of time and let nature dictate your rhythm.

Two days is the perfect amount of time to catch the true essence of Holbox. However, a small warning based on our own experience: the Mexican sun can be brutal! With this itinerary, you will make the most out of your adventure without melting away.

Day 1: The Expedition to Punta Mosquito. This is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. At low tide, you can walk for miles along a sandbank right in the middle of the ocean. Make no mistake, though: when the sun is high in the sky, the extreme heat makes this walk a heavy challenge. Head out as early as possible, bring liters of water, and prepare for a tough but unforgettable trek. The reward is absolutely worth it! In the evening, cool down with a cold beer while watching the sunset at Punta Cocos.
Day 2: Cruising and Street Art. On our first try, we thought we were being smart by renting bicycles to explore the island. Bad plan! Depending on the time of year, it is simply way too hot to peddle through the loose sand. We quickly traded the bikes in for a golf cart. Cruising through the streets with the wind in your hair, hunting for the most beautiful murals. Going up and down the sandy beach road that stretches from the town to the sandbank, now that is pure enjoyment.

The Vibe Remains

Of course, when we first arrived, we felt a brief moment of nostalgia for the quiet little island we encountered ten years ago. The arrival of buggies and the larger crowds definitely change the dynamic. But as soon as evening falls, the lanterns in the village light up, and you stand under the starry sky with your feet in the warm sand, you feel it again. That authentic Holbox vibe is still there. It is wilder, bigger, and hotter than before, but it remains one of our absolute favorite places on earth.
